Bill to Help Start-up Businesses Passes HouseSmall businesses and entrepreneurs will get more support from the State of Iowa under a new bill approved by the Iowa House this week. The bill will also help young Iowans land jobs in key growth industries like advanced manufacturing, biosciences and information technology.Senate File 142 establishes the Innovation and Commercialization Development Fund with $3 million from the Grow Iowa Values Fund. Read More Budget Bill Uses Citizen Ideas for SavingsEarlier this session, House Democrats encouraged Iowans to offer ways for the state to save money as the fiscal year 2010 budget was crafted. Hundreds of Iowans, including many state employees, offered their ideas through a special website. This week, the House passed House File 809, the administration and regulation budget, incorporating some of those ideas.House Files 809 deals with thirteen state departments, agencies and offices, including the state auditor, treasurer, secretary of state, governor, departments of administration, commerce, ethics and campaign finance, human rights, inspection and appeal, management, revenue, the drug policy office, and the rebuild Iowa office. The bill will cut state spending for these offices by $11.5 million, or about 12%. Read More Disaster Assistance for Farms and Non-ProfitsThe Department of Workforce Development and the Rebuild Iowa Office have announced a new program, the Small Business Disaster Recovery Grant, to help small businesses, farmers and non-profit organizations affected by the floods and tornadoes of 2008. The program will provide grants of up to $5,000 to help pay for damages.In order to qualify for the program, a business, non-profit agency or farm must have existed prior to the disaster; have 25 or fewer employees; be located in a county that was declared eligible for public assistance by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA); and experienced a dislocation of at least one worker as a result of the disaster. Businesses do not need to have a Small Business Administration (SBA) loan or have received FEMA assistance in order to qualify for this program.
